Text layout engine options

Fontmatrix uses its own text layout engine (TLE) to support advanced OpenType features. The TLE has a number of variables you can tune via Service → Text layout engine options.

The dialog looks like an audio equalizer — drag sliders to change weights:

  • Before — factor applied to a break node before the first OUT_OF_LINE node.

  • Exact — factor applied to the first OUT_OF_LINE node.

  • After — factor applied to nodes after the first OUT_OF_LINE node.

  • End — same factor for the last line of the paragraph.

  • H-penalty — extra factor applied when the node is a hyphen.

  • Max. compression — maximum compression of white spaces.
